SC summons govt for granting amnesty to Dhungel

KATHMANDU, May 25: Supreme Court (SC) has summoned the government for reasons why Maoist leader Bal Krishna Dhungel should be given amnesty. 

The government has to appear at the court on Sunday and furnish reasons as per the order. 

On Thursday a writ petition was filed against the government’s decision to grant amnesty to murder-convict Maoist leader Bal Krishna Dhungel.

Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi on Thursday filed a writ petition at the SC seeking stay order on the government’s decision to grant amnesty to Dhungel.

Prime Minister and the Council of  Ministers, Home Ministry, Ministry of Law have been mentioned as defendants in the writ petition.

It is learnt that the government is making preparations to release almost 800 prisoners including Dhungel as per the existing law that grants 60 percent amnesty to the prisoners if their behaviors’ found improved.
