Hetauda Hospital doctors resign en masse

MAKWANPUR, Sept 15: Doctors of Hetauda Hospital resigned en masse on Thursday after physical assault of two doctors working at Sancho Hospital in Hetauda by a group on Wednesday. A total of 78 doctors working in the hospital submitted their resignations to the Medical Superintendent Dr Ram Chandra Sapkota citing concerns for their safety.

This incident has caused doctors from all hospitals in Makwanpur, excluding Hetauda Hospital, to go on strike. Today, these doctors have suspended all services except for emergency services throughout the district, and said that they will continue their protest until action is taken against the culprits.

The victim, Dr Prasant Bidari, has alleged that the incident happened under the protection of the police. He said that when he went to file a complaint with the police, SP Sitaram Rijal forced him to reach an agreement instead of registering a complaint. According to Dr Bidari, there is no working environment when one’s life is at risk. He mentioned that while attempting to report an incident on charge of attempt to murder, the police appeared to protect the wrongdoers.

On August 7, a dengue-infected patient from Padma Pokhari, Makwanpur, was admitted to Sancho Hospital for treatment. However, the hospital referred the patient to Chitwan Medical College in Chitwan on the morning of August 8 for further treatment. The patient died on August 10 during treatment. After the death of the patient, the relatives of the deceased came to the hospital and sought details of the victim’s cause of death, Dr Prasant Bidari said.

He said, "We had promptly explained the patient's medical condition to the family, and they had left with their consent. Suddenly, a month later, when we were attacked in a well-planned manner, it wasn't just us but all doctors who became vulnerable."
