Shrestha aims to defend Surya Nepal title to retain his top spot

KATHMANDU, May 20: Number one golfer Shivaram Shrestha is looking forward to defending the title of the Surya Nepal Premier Golf Championship, the final event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2017/18, teeing off at par-72 Gokarna Golf Club on Monday to retain his position at top of the rankings for next season. Shrestha has already won five out of nine tournaments in the ongoing season despite not being at his usual best. 

He bagged titles of Ghanashyam's Professional Golden Jubilee Golf Tournament, Surya Nepal Eastern Open, Surya Nepal Central Open, Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play and Golfer Pilots NPGA Golf Championship. The marquee golfer finished runner up in three while had to do with the 10th in the Surya Nepal Challenge opening up the possibility of relinquishing the top spot for next year which he has been holding since 2011. 

Currently second ranked, Bhuwan Nagarkoti is chasing Shrestha. 

Similarly, Shrestha also believes Sanjay Lama as another strong contender along with Nagarkoti for the title bout. In the previous edition, Shrestha defeated Lama and Surya Prasad Sharma by 3 strokes.

Players have already arrived in Kathmandu to prepare for the biggest event of the season. 
The winner will bag Rs 230,000, while the runner up will get Rs 140,000.

The biggest tournament of the season in terms of cash purse, Surya Nepal Premier offers Rs 1.26 million. Shrestha is undoubtedly one of the top contenders of the tournament and is preparing hard for the season-ender.
