Nepal started observing International Women’s Day 34 years ago, commemorating a significant occasion that underscores the united commitment to human rights and the ongoing pursuit of gender parity. The theme for Women's Day this year (March 8) is "Invest in women: Accelerate progress," complemented by the campaign theme, "Inspire Inclusion”. In celebration of the 34th International Women’s Day in Nepal, Republica has curated a collection of 34 inspiring stories showcasing unwavering courage, resilience, and empowerment of women below the age of 34. These stories are not merely personal; they wield a profound impact, shaping the lives of those who share them. They unfold as tales of courage, resilience, and empowerment.

Sushma Neupane, aged 31, is a dedicated advocate for land rights in Kalika Rural Municipality, Rasuwa. Despite the longstanding struggles faced by her ancestors to secure land ownership, Neupane realized the loss of ownership despite their efforts. Determined to address this injustice, she led a movement to secure land rights for real farmers in the district.

Through her leadership and collective efforts, Neupane successfully facilitated the allocation of 152 plots of land exempt of state tax to approximately 500 families. Additionally, she spearheaded initiatives to restore land rights to 131 families in Haku who were deprived of Guthi (trust) land, and helped reclaim land for 17 families in Bhorle, which had been unlawfully auctioned off and mortgaged to a bank under false pretenses.

Furthermore, Neupane advocated for gender equality in land ownership by ensuring joint land ownership certificates for approximately 800 couples, granting wives equal rights to their husbands' land.

Inspired by her father's commitment to fighting for the rights of the landless, Neupane embarked on her own journey of activism from a young age. Instead of seeking employment after completing her SLC, she dedicated herself to championing the cause of the marginalized and oppressed in her community. Despite the lack of financial rewards, Neupane finds fulfillment in her advocacy work, emphasizing the importance of fighting for justice and land rights for the deprived.
