Tatopani border reopens after eight years (with photos)

KATHMANDU, Sept 1: The Tatopani border crossing between Nepal and China has finally reopened for the movement of people after being closed for eight years. Today, the residents of Sindhupalchowk, who obtained the entry permit from the Department of Immigration from the Miteri bridge in Liping, left for China after being checked by the Chinese security personnel. The Chinese officials warmly welcomed the team including Member of Parliament (MP) Madhav Sapkota.

Madhav Sapkota, a directly elected member of the House of Representatives from Sindhupalchowk-1, who played a leading role in opening the checkpoint, reached the Tatopani checkpoint early in the morning. People's representatives of the Tatopani area, along with officials from Customs and Immigration Office reached the checkpoint. Sapkota confirmed that the checkpoint is now fully operational.

After the devastating earthquake on April 25, 2015, the border between Nepal and China was completely closed. The border was closed for a long time due to huge human and material losses on both sides of Nepal and China. After overcoming the difficulties created by the earthquake, the checkpoint was operated only in a limited way in February 2020, after the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the checkpoint was closed again.

Two-way import and export was opened from May 1, 2023 through the border, allowing the import of limited goods from China. Sapkota also raised his voice in parliament for the movement of people after the opening of import and export. He raised the issue in parliament and drew the attention of the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Foreign Minister, along with engaging in diplomatic efforts.

Some time ago, the Chinese authorities sent a message that they were ready to permit the movement of people through the checkpoint starting today. After that, Chief District Officer Ramesh Neupane said that it was decided to allow local traffic after a discussion with the Chinese officials.
