TU receives 43 applications for post of Vice-Chancellor

KATHMANDU, Jan 23: As many as 43 people have applied for the post of Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU). According to the Ministry of Education, work is being done to verify these applications and see if any application has to be rejected due to the lack of any document.

After Chancellor and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal instructed TU to proceed with the Vice-Chancellor selection process on the basis of open competition, the recommendation committee led by Education Minister Ashok Kumar Rai, who is also the Pro-Chancellor, asked for applications in the first week of January.

The deadline for applying for Vice Chancellor was 15 days. Suresh Adhikari, secretary of the Ministry of Education, said that 43 applications were received during this period, including 41 from men and two from women.

Among the aspirants for vice-chancellor were  Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr  Shivalal Bhusal, Vice-Chancellor of Mid-West University Prof Dr Nanda Bahadur Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of TU Prof Dr Tirtha Raj Khaniya, former vice-chancellor of Open University Prof Dr Lekhnath Sharma and former vice-chancellor of Pokhara University Prof Dr Keshar Jung Baral.

Similarly, Dean Kusum Shakya of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of TU, former registrar of TU Prof Dr Chandra  Mani Paudel, former Rector of TU Guna Nidhi Neupane, former Acting Vice-Chancellor of Open University Prof Dr Indra Karki, former head of the History Department of the TU Prof Dr Rajkumar Pokharel have also submitted their applications.

Likewise Prof Dr Tanka Nath Dhamala, Prof Dr Anandaballabh Joshi, Prof Dr Akkaljev Mishra, Prof Dr Ridish Kumar Pokharel, Prof Dr Gyanendra Prasad Paudel, Prof Dr Mahendra Chalise, Prof Dr Bhoj Raj Aryal, Prof Dr Narayan Prasad Belbase, Prof Dr Hemraj Sharma, Prof Dr Vedanath Sharma, Prof Dr Prakash Ghimire (Kathmandu), Prof Dr  Prakash Ghimire (Gorkha) have also applied.

Similarly, Prof Dr Kedarnath Ghimire, Prof Dr Mahendra Prasad Sharma, Prof Dr Binod Parajuli, Prof Dr Dev Bahadur Khadka, Prof Dr Krishna Raj Tiwari, Prof Dr Govinda Subedi, Prof Dr Navraj Devkota, Prof Dr Ram Prasad Regmi, Prof Dr Chitra Bahadur Budhathoki, Prof Dr Triratna Bajracharya, Prof  Dr Ekraj Ojha and Prof Dr Pramod Kumar Jha have also applied.

Similarly, Dr Ramchandra Basnet, Dr Vinay Kumar Jha, Dr Narayan Shubh Pathak, Narayan Prasad Pathak, Sangita Rayamjhi, Sanjay Acharya, Surya Bahadur Thapa, Bhimsen Devkota and Balamukunda Regmi have also applied for the post of Vice Chancellor of the University.

After evaluating the presentation and interviewing the applicants, the recommendation committee led by the Minister of Education submits the names of the three people who get the best marks to the Chancellor and the Prime Minister. Among those three people, one person will be appointed by the Chancellor as the Vice-Chancellor.

Tribhuvan University is without a Vice-Chancellor after Prof Dr Dharma Kant Baskota's tenure ended on November 2. Prime Minister and Chancellor of Tribhuvan University Pushpa Kamal Dahal gave the responsibility of Acting Vice-Chancellor to Prof Dr Shivalal Bhusal, Principal of the University Campus for three months.

The next day, a search committee was formed under the coordination of Education, Science and Technology Minister Ashok Rai for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor. The same committee had issued a notice on 5th January and called for applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor. In the notice, there was a protest after the provision was made that the officials of the university must submit at least three years of work (including the year, month and day) and the certified copy of the details of the opening of employment. After that notification was canceled and another notification was issued on 8th January.
