UML prioritizes 'grassroot' campaign

KATHMANDU, March 2: The CPN-UML has attached higher priority to its 'Mission Grassroots' campaign than the upcoming presidential election. Under the 'Mission Grassroots' campaign, seven vice-chairpersons and seven secretaries of the party have been mobilized in the field with high priority.

During the formation of the current government, the five-party alliance formed on December 25 collapsed and a new eight-party alliance was formed.

Now, all the vice chairpersons, except Subas Nemwang, are focused on the grassroots campaign of the party. As part of the two-month party strengthening and expansion campaign, UML's "Mission Grassroots" campaign has already started on February 17. Apart from UML Chairman KP Oli, vice chair Nemwang and the leaders assigned to the central office, everyone is involved in the campaign. Chairman Oli launched the campaign to be held in all seven provinces on February 17.

As part of the campaign, party central committee members have been deployed at the municipality level for two months. The UML has given the responsibility of 3 municipalities to one central member. Under which they have been assigned 11 tasks. "The 11 tasks include renewal of membership, management of party committees, training, meeting, interaction in meetings, understanding local problems, looking at conflicts within the party and resolving them," said Bhishma Adhikari, office secretary of the party. According to him, for the preparation of the presidential election, the leaders including the party chairman are in Kathmandu and all other leaders are engaged in the grassroot campaign. Leaders ranging from the party's vice chairpersons to the standing committee members have been assigned to monitor and coordinate the campaign. UML has nominated one of its vice chairpersons, Subas Nemwang, as the presidential candidate.

Under this campaign, Vice-chairperson Astalaxmi Shakya, Secretary Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and leaders Sher Dhan Rai, Agni Prasad Kharel, Rajendra Prasad Gautam and Hikmat Karki have been deployed in Koshi Province. Similarly, Senior Vice-chairperson Ishwar Pokharel, Secretary Raghubir Mahaseth, leaders Guru Prasad Baral, Lalbabu Pandit and Sita Paudel have been assigned to Madhesh Province.

Vice Chairmen Surendra Pandey, Gokarnaraj Bista, Kashinath Adhikari, Raghuji Pant, Krishnagopal Shrestha and Sher Bahadur Tamang have been assigned in Bagmati Province. In Gandaki Province, Vice-chairman Yuvraj Gyawali, secretary Padmakumari Aryal, leaders Kiran Gurung, Khagraj Adhikari and Thammaya Thapa have been assigned. Vice Chairpersons Ram Bahadur Thapa, Chabi Lal Bishwakarma, Bheem Acharya, Rajan Bhattarai and Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe have been mobilized in Lumbini Province. Secretary Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai, Bhanubhakta Dhakal, Yam lal Kandel and Gorakh Bahadur Bogati are deployed in Karnali Province. Although the party has given Nemwang the responsibility of Karnali Province, he is currently in Kathmandu, soliciting votes as he is a presidential candidate.

Vice-chairman Bishnu Prasad Paudel and leaders Lekhraj Bhatta, Manichandra Thapa, Vinda Pandey and Karna Bahadur Thapa have been assigned to Sudurpaschim Province. Special Committee (Central Office) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, Prithvi Subba Gurung, Bishnu Rimal and leader Dr Bhishma Adhikari have been posted. Secretary General Pokharel is assigned to support the work of the party chairman.
