RUKUM, Aug 2: An indefinite Rukum district banda or general strike was called from Thursday over the clashes that took place between two student unions on Wednesday evening.
Shops, industries and schools were completely closed and traffic services were disrupted in Rukum district headquarters, Musikot, and surrounding villages. Passengers to and from Rukum district have been stranded on roads in various places in the district.
Students of student organizations affiliated to Unified CPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML came into clashes at around 6:00 pm on Wednesday during the meeting at the campus with representatives of all the student organizations to discuss for reopening the campus as the ANNISU (Revolutionary) close to UCPN-Maoist had a week ago submitted memorandum putting forth various demands.
Three students close to the UCPN-Maoist were injured in the incident. The injured students are being prepared to send to Nepalgunj through helicopter for treatment.
Police are in alert at every corner in Musikot bazaar keeping in view any untoward incident. Police arrested 20 cadres of the ANNFSU, a student organization close to CPN-UML, including district Chairman Madan Khadka, according to District Police Office, Rukum.
ANNISU-R had submitted a memorandum to campus administration and padlocked the school administration demanding return of extra allowance provided to lecturer of mathematics, Padam Bahadur Khatri, make account system transparent, and amend the campus regulations, among others.
