KATHMANDU, Aug 8: A joint squad of Central Investigation Bureau and Metropolitan Police Circle, Kalimati arrested an Indian citizen, Pitambar Pashawan with 1KG gold from Kalanki on Tuesday on suspicion that he was either trying to smuggle the gold or had bought it in the black market.
Pashawan, 38, who is from Motihari Peeparakothi of India, has been temporarily living in Birjung.
He claimed the gold was bought from Jwalaji Traders of Bishalbazar Kathmandu.
Police also raided the suspected shop on Wednesday. Tek Bahadur Tamang, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Kalimati Metropolitan Circle said, “We arrested him when he was about leave for Birjung from Kalanki at around 10 pm.
“Pashwan, does not have authorized purchase bill and has been sent to the Department of Revenue Investigation for further investigation”, said the Inspector Pangeni.
One Kg of gold costs around Rs 4.8 million in the local market.
More smokers arrested, fined
Meanwhile police said they had detained and fined 17 people for allegedly violating a ban on smoking in public in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
Metropolitan Police Range Officials said the alleged violators were arrests from New Road, Durbar Marg, Kamalpokhari, Thankot, Gausala and Singha Durbar areas and later freed after they promised not to smoke again in public. They were also fined Rs 100 each.
