KATHMANDU, Aug 12 : Accusing the Tribhuvan University (TU) management of trying recruit office bearers at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) on the basis of political affiliation, senior professor at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) Dr Govinda KC has decided to continue fast-unto-death protest from Monday afternoon.
Dr KC who has already staged fast-unto-death twice in the past said the TU officials are conspiring to appoint office bearers on the basis of political affiliation of the candidate concerned ignoring the recommendation made by the team led by Dean Dr Kumud Kumar Kafley. “TU officials have asked us to forge consensus between three contending groups ignoring the recommendation to appoint office bearers on the basis of merit,” said Dr KC.
KC had staged fast-unto-death twice in the past demanding merit based appointments in the vacant posts and implementation of probe committee report implicating Institute of Medicine (IoM) officials in several irregularities.
Dr KC had broken his fast when the management had made a written commitment to address his demands. KC had broken his second fast-unto-death only after the university appointed senior-most professor Dr Kumud Kumar Kafley as the dean of IoM. However, the TU management has still not appointed office bearers for six key positions.
Dr Kafley is retiring on Tuesday and Dr KC suspects that the TU management would appoint a new dean on the basis of political affiliation. “I have decided to continue my fast-onto-death protest to prevent any such eventuality,” he added. Dr KC has demanded appointment of officials on the basis of seniority.
