How Nepal fares in Social Progress Index

THE WEEK BUREAU
Nepal has left behind both nuclear-weapon states of South Asia, India and Pakistan, in this year’s Social Progress Index (SPI). Only two countries, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, are ahead of Nepal. However, three other countries, namely Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan, have not been included in the SPI report.

The SPI report-2014, published just this month, has ranked Nepal at the 101st place out of the total 132 countries studied by Social Progress Imperative, an International non-profit organization that evaluates how countries are progressing in terms of basic human needs, foundations for well-being and opportunity. The organization uses data from a wide range of sources to prepare the report, which reflects the socio-economic wellbeing of each of the 132 countries. [More]

  Keep the flames at bay
  BY THE WEEK BUREAU

Ever since one of those old guys living in the caves discovered that rubbing two stones or sticks together could produce sparks, fire has been an integral part of human life. A bad master but a good servant, fire has been a warm friend as well as a vicious foe. Most mornings, over steaming cups of tea, we read newspaper headlines that talk about homes and lives being swallowed by flames. We then put the paper down to wonder: Is it possible to protect ourselves from a fire? More importantly, what to do if there’s a fire?

The Week has brought to you some simple activities that can actually protect many lives, save a lot of trouble and prevent great losses when it comes to material wealth and property.
