KATHMANDU, Oct 9: For the first time in its history, the government is all set to erect man-sized statues of two foreign nationals in honor of their contribution to the country. Statues of adventurer Boris Lissanevitch and Mt Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hilary will be erected on the premises of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
The government will also erect the statue of first Mt Everest conqueror Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.
“They have all played significant roles for the promotion of tourism in Nepal,” said Subash Niraula, Senior Director at the NTB.
According to Ranjan Aryal, officiating Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA), the government has already started work on erecting the statues. Hilary and Sherpa were the first two persons to scale up the world´s highest peak on 29 May 1953, whereas Lissanevitch was the first to introduce the concept of ´tourist friendly hotels´ in Nepal. According to NTB officials, the credit behind the success of Yak & Yati Hotel also goes to Lissanevitch.
As per the instruction of the ministry, the NTB has allocated land on its premise for statues and the work has already begun. Officials said formal inauguration of the statues has been scheduled for October 11. According to the ministry, the government took the decision to erect the statues of Boris upon the written request of non-residential Nepalis.
