Flood affects over 15,000 families, many displaced

KATHMANDU, Oct 10: Hundreds of families have been displaced and hundreds of bigaha of standing crops destroyed by landslides and flooding in the west of the country over the past few days.
More than 1,000 families have been displaced and more than 15,000 affected by flooding in Kailali district, reports Dil Bahadur Chhatyal from Dhangadhi.
Floods on Tuesday and Wednesday have displaced 1,266 families, who are now sheltering at school buildings, community forests and any other available high ground.
Administrative Officer at the District Administration Office Basanta Kumar Kanaujiya said Dhansinghpur, Thapapur and Narayanpur Village Development Committees (VDC) have been affected totally by landslides and flooding while Tikapur Municipality and Lalbojhi, Bhajani, Ratanpur, Pawera, Hasuliya and Khailad VDCs have also been affected.
Dhangadhi Municipality and Geta, Phulbari, Urma, Bauniya and Joshipur VDCs have suffered some damage, according to Kanaujiya.
He said the administration is preparing to distribute relief material to the flood victims.
Around 2,400 families have been affected by incessant rain in Banke district. Khusi Ram Chaudhary from Baijapur-1 said water diverted from the Rapti river made its way into four houses including his own and two of them have collapsed. According to the District Administration Office, four days of rainfall has submerged eight VDCs with Gangapur VDC, where 1,081 families are surrounded by water, the most affected. Other affected VDCs are Holiya, Phattepur, Mahetiya, Kachanapur, Mahadevpuri, Baijapur and Binauna.
Our Dadeldhura correspondent Barun Paneru reports that 46 families in Mastamandu, Deval Divyapur, Belapur, Manilek, Ganeshpur, Chipur and Jogbudha VDCs have become displaced due to the heavy rainfall at the start of the week.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chakra Bahadur Singh said 15 families were displaced in Deval Divyapur due to landslides, 10 in Jogbudha, eight in Mastamandu, six in Manilek, five in Belapur and two in Chipur.
The displaced have been sheltering in schools and with relatives.
Likewise, Bikram Giri reports from Mahendranagar that 53 persons of 13 families have been displaced in Majhigaun, Syadi Tarakot, Banjh, Deulek and Luyeta VDCs of Bajhang district. Landslides and flooding have also destroyed hundreds of acres of paddy, according to DSP Basanta Panta.
The administration and the Red Cross are providing rice to the displaced.
Similarly, more than 100 families have been displaced in Achham district with 80 families displaced in Patalkot alone, according to Chief District Officer (CDO) Gyan Prasad Dhakal. Dhakal said Home Minister Bhim Rawal visited Sanfe and Patalkot VDCs and distributed nine quintals of rice and two quintals of lentils in Sanfe, and seven quintals of rice and one quintal of lentils in Patalkot.
Meanwhile, 627 persons of 117 families have been displaced in Doti. Acting CDO Raj Kapur Chaulagain estimates that the number of displaced families will cross 200. He said the administration is distributing relief material to the victims with help from the Red Cross and other organizations. The road connecting Sanfe with Bajura district headquarters Martadi has been obstructed, affecting the movement of even mules.
Likewise, 96 families have been displaced in Kanchanpur district. The police and administration said that the number is bound to increase as VDC secretaries are expected to file field reports from their respective villages.
