Computer classes attract students to community schools

BAGLUNG, Oct 12: Guardians in Kushmishera are pulling out their children from private schools and admitting them to the local community school. However, this is not due to lack of funds, but because the community schools are offering a better learning environment for their children.
The transfer of students to the Pallopakha Community Lower Secondary School of Kushmishera began after the school started teaching in English medium and introduced computers. “The quality of education at the community school is better and it is free as well. But we have to pay fees in private schools, which is why I transferred my children to the community school,” said Tulasi Devi Sharma. Nearly three dozen families have followed suit.
The community school has a total of 14 computers which are used for teaching. The school was assisted by the District Education Office, Constituency Development Fund and the local community forest to obtain the computers. The Gaja Youth Club is also helping the school to manage classes and is providing educational materials and training. In order to support the school, guardians often organize fund raising programs to meet the employees´ and teachers´ salaries.
With the active participation of community, the school now offers free computer classes for students from Grades 1-8, informed the school principal Uma Kanta Sharma. “Along with the increase in the number of students, guardians too are more keen about uplifitng the school´s teaching atmosphere,” said Sharma. There are nearly 350 students enrolled in the school at present.
“We are getting good education at the community school,” said Dinesh Sharma, a seventh grader. The Pallopakha community school has other specialties as well. From time to time, guardians are informed about their children´s progress; school starts at 9:45 am instead of 10 am; and a question-answer session is held after the daily morning prayers.
