KATHMANDU, Oct 12: The 80th Congress of World Chess Federation (FIDE) which will begin from Tuesday in Greece is said to provide a special package for Nepal´s active effort in the development of chess in a short span.
Rajesh Hari Joshi, the chairman of Nepal Chess Association, is scheduled to leave for Greece on Tuesday to attend the congress.
According to Joshi, it is not clear what the special package consists but FIDE officials have informed that the support Nepal will receive will depend upon Nepal´s progress in chess which Joshi will discuss in Greece.
Joshi said Nepal may also get award as Nepal has not only shown progress in the last few years but also produced good players which FIDE is well aware of.
Out of 149 member nations of FIDE that will participate in the congress, Nepal ranks in 121st position. But among the Asian countries, Nepal is in the fifth position behind India, Bangladesh, Vietnam and China.
Poudel, Baral leading in inter-school chess
POKHARA, Oct 12: Binod Poudel of KEF and Bikal Baral of Motherland School are on the lead with four points after the fourth and fifth round of ongoing Inter-school Chess Championship being held in Pokhara on Monday. Poudel of KEF and Baral of Motherland School won both rounds of matches of the day.
Likewise, Sudip Chhetri of Pratibha School, Nirmal Thapa Magar of New Moonlight School and Rojin Bijukche of Kumudini School are trailing behind in second position with three points each.
NVA selects players for SAG
KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) has selected 18 players from the first phase selection matches held at the Dasharath Stadium for upcoming South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in Bangladesh, Dhaka.
The players selected are Saroj Shrestha, Jhom Bahadur Thapa, Im Bahadur Magar, Bharat Bahadur Shah, Birendra Chaudhary, Sanjay Aryal, Dhruba Poudel, Ramananda Singh and Gyan Bahadur Malla of the Nepal Police Club.
Similarly, Dinesh Chaudhary, Bhola KC, Dil Bahadur Karki and Raj Kumar Thapa of Nepal Army Club and Kailash Datta Bhatta, Sunil Kumar Shrestha, Khusilal Chaudhary and Dipendra Bhatta of the Armed Police Force, and Roman Shrestha of the Central Region have been selected.
Marathon winners awarded
KATHMANDU, Oct 12: The winners of the third edition of Real Kathmandu Marathon held on September 12 were awarded with cash prize and certificates amidst a function at the Nepal Army Headquarters on Monday.
The top ten runners in men´s category -- Arjun Kumar Basnet, Rajendra Bahndari, Uttam Khatri, Mahendra Shahi, Arjun Prasad Dhakal, Ram Bhandari, Ram Kumar Khatri, Chandra Bahadur Mahato, Raibat Bahadur Dahal and Shyam Parajuli bagged US $ 5,000, $ 3,000, $ 1,500, $ 1,000, $ 600, $ 500, $ 400, $ 300, $ 200 and $ 100 respectively. All these runners other than fifth place holder Dhakal (Armed Police Force-APF)) are from the Nepal Army Club (NAC).
Winner Basnet clocked 2:25:36 hours while Bhandari and Khatri had finished the race in 2:28:38 hours and 2:30:02 hours respectively.

Similarly, the top ten athletes in women´s marathon -- Kanchi Maya Koju (Bhaktapur), Krishneshwori Sintakala (APF), Surya Maya Rai (APF), Sonu Jaya Rai (APF), Pamela Carlson (USA), Nigma Yangee Sherpa, Lakpa Diki Sherpa, Irina Niewerberger (USA), Sarswati Rai Khadka and Shree Kumari Shrestha won cash prize of US $ 3,000, $ 2,000, $ 1,000, $ 500, $ 400, $ 350, $ 300, $ 250, $ 150 and $ 100 respectively.
The winners of men´s half marathon Letar Singh Khatri (NAC), Raj Kumar Bista (NAC) and Bhumi Raj Rai (Nepal Police Club), and women´s half marathon winner Brinda Shrestha (APF), Geeta Khatri (APF), and Hari Devi Ratlawat (Bhaktapur) each bagged cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Likewise, the winners of 5-km open men´s and women´s race, 5-km high school boy´s and girl´s, 3-km wheel chair men´s and women´s category were also awarded with cash prize and certificates on the occasion.
Chief of Army Staff Chhatraman Singh Gurung and NRN President Upendra Mahato among others handed over the prizes.
