BIRGUNJ, Oct 13: The spread of diarrhea in Ratanpuri VDC of Bara district shows no signs of abating. In the past five days alone, some 300 people have been affected the disease in Ratanpuri 1 and 2 due to consumption of contaminated water.
In absence of alternative water sources, some 700 households in these VDCs continue to consume water from the contaminated sources.
According to Kishori Yadav, in-charge of Ratnapuri sub-health post, the outbreak was caused by contamination of water source at Akasedhara of Chatiwan VDC. Incessant rainfalls in the area had contaminated the water source. “We have already treated over 300 patients,” Yadav said. The patients are being treated in the classrooms of Nepal Rastriya Secondary School.
Though the District Health Office has provided medicines, lack of skilled health workers is hampering the delivery of effective health service.
Seven patients, whose condition was critical, have been taken to Narayani Sub-regional Hospital in Birgunj. The elderly and the children comprise a majority of patients.
