SILGADI, DOTI, Oct 21: Stating that the government failed to fulfill its promise, flood victims have been staging protests at the District Administration Office, Doti, almost everyday. The victims, who have been living under miserable conditions after the floods swept their homes and arable lands away, have been demanding speedy relief.
Following the floods, many victims have been rendered homeless. Moreover, even those who received compensation from the government have expressed dissatisfaction.
“The floods destroyed our property worth millions. How can Rs 3,000 compensate for the loss?” questioned Padam Bahadur Bista. Padam lost his home and 11 ropanis of land in the floods.
Staffers at the District Administration Office (DAO) claimed that they have been doing everything possible to address the plight of victims. According to Rajkapur Chaulagain, Chief District Officer, the DAO has been trying to manage money through the Natural Disaster Relief Committee. “We have been trying our best to manage money and distribute it to the victims at the earliest,” said Chaulagai.
District Administration Office has distributed Rs 25,000 per victim and Rs 3,000 for other damages to the flood affected people, which amounted to a total of Rs 700,000. The DAO has halted the distribution process after the Natural Disaster Relief Committee was not able to provide additional funds.
Earlier, the Home Ministry had sent Rs 500,000 to the DAO, even as the local administration had demanded Rs 1,000,000. Now that Natural Disaster Relief Committee is running short of money, the administration has asked the Home Ministry to provide additional funds.
According to the information given by the police, six people died in the floods, while one is still missing. The floods destroyed 5000 ropanies of land and displaced some 200 families.
