Minister for children, maternity hospitals in all regions

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Minister for Health and Population Umakant Chaudhary has stressed the need for establishing children and maternity hospitals in every region of the country.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the National Annual Performance Review Workshop organized by the Ministry of Health and Population, Chaudhary said children and maternity hospitals should be constructed in every region so that health of these vulnerable groups can be improved. Currently there are just one children and one maternity hospital in Kathmandu while one children hospital is being built in Lahan, Siraha.

Chaudhary also said that he has initiated the process for construction of a labor hospital in the name of Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala. "There are separate hospitals for civil servants and others (security personnel) but there is no such hospital for the marginalized laborers. It would be fitting to name it after respected leader Girija Prasad Koirala who started his political career as a trade unionist," Chaudhary reasoned.

He informed that US Secretary of State wrote to him asking what kind of support is needed for nutrition and food security issues. Chaudhary also spoke about providing incentives to doctors who work in remote areas.

The three-day workshop will review achievements in the health sector against the set targets, compare trend of health service with two previous fiscal years, review implementation of the recommendations made in the last annual review, prepare specific strategies for under-covered area and identify issues and problems among other things.

Addressing the session, the secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr Sudha Sharma, said that framework for Nepal Health Sector Support System is being prepared. Directors of the regional health directorates also made presentations about the health situation of their respective regions
