UDAYAPUR, Nov 9: Kirat State Committee, an ethnic front of the UCPN (Maoist), has announced Khotang district as part of the Kirat Autonomous Province. Maoist politburo member and former minister for culture and state restructuring Gopal Kirati announced Khotang as part of the Kirat Autonomous Province amidst a function at Khotang district headquarters, Diktel.
The committee announced the autonomous province despite the party´s earlier decision to put off any such announcements. Kirati said he has made the announcement as the country is now going federal. “This will be written into the new constitution and brought into effect,” he said, adding, “We have entered its implementation phase.”
He also warned that if federalism is not implemented though the new constitution, it would be brought into effect through protests. He called on the locals to prepare for such protests.
Various district-level Maoist leaders spoke during the function that also included cultural programs. Under the Maoist proposal on federalism, there are six districts under the Kirat Autonomous Province. These are Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Solukhumbu, Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha. The party has proposed Tyamke in Khotang as the capital of the province. The Maoists have erected towers at Ratanchha, Chihandanda and Tyamkedanda as symbols of Kirat civilization.
Federalism is still under discussion at the Constituent Assembly committee for state restructuring.
