  Gyanendra named as vice-captain
CAN wishes good luck to Nepal team

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Nov 13: Gyanendra Malla has been named vice-captain of the national cricket team for the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) had earlier named Paras Khadka as the captain while maintaining silence about vice-captain.

During the farewell program on Friday, coach Roy Luke Dias said he was unaware about the vice-captain. But, after consultation with CAN president Binay Raj Pandey and general-secretary Tanka Paneru during the program, he named Gyanendra as deputy of Paras.

“While picking vice-captain, we always try to pick the player with prospects to become the future captain,” said Dias. “Paras was deputy to Binod Das because we had seen him as future captain.”

Gyanendra had led Nepali U-17 and U-19 teams earlier.Under Gyanendra´s captaincy, Nepal reached the semi-final of ACC U-17 Elite Cup in Malaysia in 2005 before it was called off after a fire broke out in the Indonesian jungle.

He was skipper of the U-19 side in 2009 that failed to reach the final and missed the qualification to the Youth World Cup in 10 years. He was deputy to Shashi Keshari in ACC U-15 Elite Cup 2005 held in UAE, where Nepal won the title.

In a farewell ceremony held at the Youth and Sports Ministry, government and CAN officials gave their best wishes to the team. Secretary at the Ministry, Sushil Rana said, “We are bidding farewell now but are eager to welcome you all after victory in the tournament.”

CAN President Binaya Raj Pandey said that there were many cricketing events for national team in the years to come as Nepal would participate in the South Asian Games, Asian Games, World Cricket division-5 and ACC trophy. “Taking all these tournaments into consideration CAN is trying to select a pool of core players”, said Pandey.
