  Adhikari shows the way

KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Surya Prasad Adhikari of Lekhnath in Kaski earns hundreds of thousands rupees every year from coffee farming. Apart from his coffee farm spreading over 20 ropanis of land, Adhikari also collects coffee produced by other local farmers.


Adhikari told myrepublica.com that he has been collecting and selling coffee produced from 2,000 plants in his farm and coffee produced by about 300 farmers in his village“ "I process raw coffee produced by the farmers and sell it in the market," Adhikari shared.

He has been getting valuable support from international volunteers for coffee processing. Volunteers that come to research coffee farming stay in his home and assist him and his family members in processing coffee.

More than 300 farmers in Ward No. 9, 10 and 11 of Lekhanth Municipality in Kaski are involved in coffee farming from the last many years.“

"Every year, I produce around 12 quintals coffee in my farm. Apart from this, I buy coffee produced by more than 300 farmers in my localities," Adhikari shared.

He has planted around 2,500 saplings of Arabica coffee in his far“. "After ten years, I will be able to produce 50 quintals coffee every year from these plan”s," Adhikari added.

Adhikari collects coffee produced in the village and processes it before selling it to Everest Coffee Mill in Kathmandu. He sells raw coffee at Rs 27 per kg and processed coffee at as high as Rs 150 per kg.

Sixty-year-old Adhikari has been involved in coffee farming for over two decades. He gave up his job in health sector to start commercial coffee farming with 11 coffee saplings brought from Gulmi district. It is under Adhikari´s initiatives that Kaski Coffee Association was established in the district. The association has been assisting farmers in coffee farming.
