Beach volleyball catching up in Nepal

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Nov 20: Beach volleyball might be new to Nepal. But it surely could open up new possibilities in the sports sector. There are hundreds of riverside beaches in Nepal and beach volleyball could be developed into a popular sports. This will not only promote internal tourism but also attract foreigners.

Shyam Sundar Lal Kakshapati, the proprietor of the Riverside Spring Resort, is the brain behind the idea of promoting beach volleyball in Nepal. He plans to strike gold by selling the product called beach volleyball.

The Riverside Spring Resort organized a three-day corporate beach volleyball contest last Friday. The contest held at the resort located in Kurintar, which lies along the bank of Trishuli River about 100 km from Kathmandu, is not the first-of-its-kind event. The resort has been organizing similar contests for the past four years. In fact, beach volleyball is fast catching up with the country folks and foreigners alike.

The organizers believe it is necessary to promote the game through fairs to promote tourism in Nepal. The participants can get acquainted with the village lifestyle and at the same time relish local arts and culture. There is also a possibility of mountain biking in the neighboring Deutar village of Gorkha district across the Trishuli River.

DB Nepali, who refereed the contest said, “The game has become more commercial and exciting in recent years.” But those who want to watch players sporting ´bikinis´ might be a bit disappointed as the sports is in its initial stage here.

Thirteen corporate houses competed in the contest. However, there was a single lady representing GTZ to grace the event.

Everest Bank clinched the title of the contest replacing the regular winner Hotel De l Annapurna. The captain of Everest Bank Ranjan Khadka´s offensive strategy helped them claim the title. While Arun Sanjel, the other participant from the Everest Bank, was named the best player of the contest.

Corporate houses like Everest Bank, Himalayan Bank, Chaudhary Group, Nanglo Bakery, Himal Media, Hotel De l Annapurna, Nepal Investment Bank, and GTZ had participated in the contest.
