KATHMANDU, March 12: Uttam Raj Thapa has emerged as a strong contender to win the title of the ongoing Rambir Shrestha Memorial First Nationwide Open Rating Chess Tournament as he is leading the tournament with 7.5 points.
He exhibited a superb performance on Friday defeating veteran player Prachanda Man Malakar and winner of Makhan Chess Tournament Ganesh Man Duwal in the eighth and ninth rounds respectively at Patan´s Purnachandi.
Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali, Ganesh Man Duwal, Sajan Pandey and Rijendra Rajbhandari are in second position with seven points each. Nepali lost with Duwal in the eighth round but registered a victory over former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar in the ninth round.
Meanwhile, Pandey beat Rabindra Shakya and Raju Subedi while Rajbhandari defeated Shyam Sundar Shrestha and Sajin Maharjan. Thapa will take on Pandey while Nepali will face Rajbhandari on Saturday in the final round.
Trailing with 6.5 points in third position are FIDE Master Manish Hamal and former Nepal champion Tandukar.
Bikes for footballers
KATHMANDU, March 12: Best players of four different positions -- a goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder and a forward -- and a best coach of the ongoing A division league football will each receive a Yamaha FZ-S motorbike.
The announcement was made on Friday after All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) signed a co-sponsorship deal for the league with Morang Auto Works, the authorized dealer of Yamaha India Private Limited.

As per the agreement, Yamaha will provide five motorbikes worth Rs 949,500 for the best position players. ANFA will bear Rs 375,000 in the total price of the motorbikes.
General Secretary of ANFA Dhirendra Pradhan and Bishnu Kumar Agrawal, the chief executive officer of Morang Auto Works, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.
Inter-campus volleyball
KATHMANDU, March 12: Tikapur Multiple Campus, Siddhanath Multiple Campus of Mahendranagar, Prithvi Narayan Campus of Pokhara and Nepal Commerce Campus advanced into the semifinals of the Inter-campus National Volleyball Tournament on Friday.
Tikapur defeated Purvanchal University 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 while Siddhanath ousted Mahendra Ratna Campus 25-18, 25-10, 25-20 in the quarterfinal matches.
Likewise, Prithvi Narayan beat Saraswati Campus 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. In another match, Nepal Commerce edged out Pashupati Campus 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18 to secure semifinal berth.
