DHANGADHI, Feb 26: Nepal Police Club started the Sixth National Games football on a winning note on Sunday while the host Far-western Region held Armed Police Force to a goalless draw.
Nepal Police Club thrashed Mid-western Region 4-1 in the opening match played at the Kailali Multiple Campus ground. Meanwhile, PLA Sports Club of Maoist combatants edged past Universities team 2-0.
Police scored two goals in the injury time of the second half but it had to wait until the 53rd minute for the first goal in the Group A match. Yogesh Shrestha opened the account for Police and Bharat Shah scored the second in the 65th minute.
Bhuwasan KC scored a goal for Mid-western Region in the 77th minute, though Umesh Ale missed a penalty in the first half. Ramesh Katuwal and Pradeep Baniya scored a goal each for Police in the injury time.
In Group B, the host Far-western Region held APF to a goalless draw. In Group C, Prem Lama and Shyam Lal Mahat scored a goal each for PLA Sports Club against the Universities team.
A group consists of three teams. The group winners and the best runner-up will reach the semifinals.
Badminton
Nepal APF Club thrashed Western Region 3-0 in the men´s team event of badminton on Sunday at the Dhangadhi Covered Hall. APF reached the semifinals after winning the match. Meanwhile, Central Region thrashed Mid-western, Far-western edged past Eastern and Nepal Police Club beat PLA Sports Club in the first round.
In women´s team event, APF defeated PLA Sports Club to secure a berth in the last four. Likewise, host Far-western beat Nepal Police, Eastern Region thrashed Central and Western Region edged past Mid-western Region to reach the semifinals.
Taekwondo
Four taekwondo players secured at least a bronze on the opening day of the Sixth National Games as they reached the semifinals of the men´s 54 kg weight category.
Taekwondo events are taking place in Mahendranagar Covered Hall. Chandra Rana Magar of PLA Sports Club, Nisham Aambule Rai of Eastern Region, Basant Saud of the host Far-western Region and Mingmar Lama of Central Region secured semifinal spots in men´s 54 kg.
Rana Magar defeated Modern Bikram Shrestha of Mid-western 11-4 in the first round while Rai thrashed Pushpa Thapa magar of Armed Police Force 8-4. Likewise, Saud pulled off a 4-3 victory over Laxman Thapa of Mid-western Region while Lama won the match against Surendra Khadgi by 1-0.
Rana will take on Rai and Saud will lock horns with Lama in the semifinals on Monday.
