DHANGADHI, Feb 28: Olympian Debu Thapa of Nepal Police Club (NPC) lost the women´s U-63 kg judo final to Sunita Magar of Central Region during the Sixth National Games on Tuesday.
Nineteen-year-old Magar, who had won bronze at the Youth Asian Games in 2008, played full time against the veteran opponent and won the match on the basis of superior points.
Chonu Gurung of Western Region and Sunita Gurung of Mid-western Region finished third in the event.
Players of Central Region dominated other matches of judo, winning four of the total six golds on Tuesday.
Kush Kumar Shrestha of Central Region clinched gold in men´s U-45 kg defeating Bishal Rauniyar in the final.
Saroj Maharjan claimed another gold for Central Region defeating Sumanta Chhetri of Western Region in the final of men´s U-60 kg.
Likewise, Upendra Thapa of Central Region won gold in men´s U-73 kg defeating Raj Bahadur Chand of NPC in the final.
Meanwhile, Shree Ram Makaju of NPC won gold in the U-90 kg weight category. Sanjay Maharjan of Central Region secured silver medal.
Ganga Chaudhary of Far-western Region defeated Bhima Thapa of Mid-western Region to lift gold in women´s U-78 kg.
Karate
Kalpana Basnet of Armed Police Force (APF) won gold in women´s U-68 kg in karate on Tuesday. Basnet defeated Pabitra Chauhan of PLA Club in the final match held at the Dhangadhi Stadium.
Maya Thapa of Mid-western Region and Laxmi Nath of Far-western Region finished joint third in the event.
Likewise, another APF player Mukunda Maharjan won gold in men´s U-67 kg defeating Diwas Shrestha of Central Region in the final. Sagar Shahi of Far-western Region and Bir Bahadur Ranemi of APF secured bronze medals.
In the men´s U-50 kg weight category, Sonam Lama of Central Region defeated Rabindra Dahal of NPC to win gold. Bijay Lama of APF and Arun Kunwar of Far-western Region finished third.
In women´s U-45 kg, Mallika Thapa of PLA won gold defeating Nirmala Tamang of Central Region. Urmila BC of Mid-western Region and Ishwari Thapa of APF settled for bronze.
Soft Tennis
Central Region clinched gold in the men´s team event of soft tennis on Tuesday. The Central Region team comprising Manoj Subba, Sohan Dhaubadel, Raju Nagarkoti, Dushyant Thapa and Bishwas Basnet defeated NPC 2-1.
The NPC team comprised Ashok Singh, Kamal Bhandari, Subodh Adhikari, Nau Bahadur Lungeli and Binod Yogi. Far-western Region and Eastern Region received bronze medals.
In the mixed doubles, the pair of Manoj Subba and Eliza Ranjit of Central Region defeated Sohan Dhaubadel and Chandra Rai, also from Central Region, for the gold medal.
The pair of Roshan Lama and Um Thapa from Mid-western Region and Raju Nagarkoti and Rekha Tuladhar from Central Region took bronze.
Women´s kabaddi
NPC overpowered Central Region in the league round of women´s kabaddi on Tuesday to boost its chances of qualifying for the next round. The physically strong NPC players had little problem defeating their opponents with a score of 51-15.
Earlier, Central Region defeated Western Region 42-19 while Eastern Region saw off Mid-western Region 47-12.
Likewise, Far-western Region defeated Mid-western Region 46-13 in another match.
Women´s volleyball
NPC and Western Region continued their winning runs in the league round of women´s volleyball for the second straight day while Central Region also registered victory on Tuesday.
NPC thrashed PLA 25-7, 25-16, 25-14 in the day´s first match for its second win in the league round. Western Region led by Manju Gurung also cruised to an easy 25-8, 25-4, 25-17 win over Mid Western Region.
Central Region beat Eastern Region 25-17, 25-16, 25-5 to keep alive its hopes of advancing into the next round.
Meanwhile, APF defeated Far-western Region 25-8, 25-19, 25-13 to dash the home team´s hopes of qualifying for the next round. It was the host´s second defeat in the league round.
Badminton
Nepal´s number one badminton player Bikash Shahi of NPC defeated Raj Bahadur Bohara of Far-western Region 21-15, 21-7 on Tuesday to advance into the quarterfinals.
In the women´s section, Pooja Shrestha (APF), Samjhana Khaling (APF), Shiksha Shrestha (APF), Shreya Pradhan (Central Region), Poonam Gurung (Western Region), Sabina Panthi (APF), Nangsala Devi Tamang (APF), Shobha Gauchan (Central Region), Nina Shrestha (APF), Amita Giri (Eastern Region), Ganga Bista (Far-western Region) and Niru Shrestha (Central Region) entered the quarterfinals winning their respective matches.
Basketball
Eastern Region set up a final showdown with Universities´ team in women´s basketball.
Eastern Region defeated Western Region 38-35 in the semifinal played on Tuesday at the court of Sudur Paschim Academy, Dhangadhi. Samiksha Neupane scored 20 points for the winning side while Anisha Tulachan scored 14 points for Western Region.
Likewise, Universities´ team pulled off a 33-28 victory over Central Region. Though Deepika Upreti scored 13 points for Central Region, it was not enough for victory. Sujata Rai was the highest scorer for the winning side with 9 points.
Meanwhile, Universities´ team confirmed its berth in the semifinals of men´s basketball on Tuesday. Universities´ team edged past Western Region 76-46 in a Group A match. Bikram Joshi scored 16 points for the winning side. In Group B, Central Region thrashed Mid-western Region 150-34. Binod Maharjan scored 20 points for the winning side.
Football
Armed Police Force, PLA Sports Club of Maoist combatants and host Far-western Region joined NPC in the semifinals of men´s football.
As Far-western Region defeated Western Region 1-0 in a Group B match, APF reached the semifinals as the group winner. Mani Ram Chaudhary scored the lone goal for Far-western Region in the 33rd minute of the match.
In Group C, Universities´ team and Eastern Region settled for a goalless draw, which paved the way to the semifinals for PLA.
In Group A, Central Region edged past Mid-western Region 2-1. Tej Ghale, Sabir Chaudhary scored for the winning side while Ritesh Khadka scored for Mid-western.
As the group winners and the best runner-up qualify for the semifinals, Far-western Region reached the last four. Far-western Region had played a goalless draw with APF on the opening day.
NPC will take on Far-western Region in the semifinal on Thursday while APF will lock horns with PLA.
Boxing
Narendra RC of Mid-western Region, Umesh Rijal of PLA and Sushil Ghimire of APF entered the semifinals in men´s 64 kg weight category of boxing. RC defeated Rajesh Gurung of Eastern Region, Rijal edged past Suresh Chand of Far-western Region and Ghimire thrashed Sujan Thapa of Central Region.
Likewise, Ratna Tamang of Nepal Police, Bikash Lama of APF, Tara Prasad Pun of Mid-western Region and Kumar Khand Thakuri of Western Region secured berths in the semifinals of men´s 69 kg weight category.
In women´s 46 kg, Diwana Sherma of Nepal Police, Nitu BK of Rupandehi, Muga Maya Pakhrin of APF and Suraj Muni Hemram of Jhapa completed the semifinal line-up.
Likewise, Mala Rai (APF), Lalita Maharjan (Kathmandu), Sushma Saud (Kanchanpur) and Shobha Thing (Makawanpur) reached the last four of women´s 48 kg.
Handball
Host Far-western Region defeated Eastern Region 15-10 in a group stage match of men´s handball on Tuesday at the Dhangadhi Stadium. Likewise, Western Region thrashed Mid-western Region 28-14. Earlier, Central Region held Nepal Police to a 19-19 draw in the first match of the day.
