KATHMANDU, March 19: Staffers of Bir Hospital have demanded stern action against Saroj Yadav, Minister of State for Health and Population, for misbehaving with their colleagues at the emergency ward Sunday night. A drunken Yadav had misbehaved with health workers and manhandled a photo journalist.
A press statement issued on Monday by 15 trade unions of the hospital also demanded that the minister should apologize with the staffers of the emergency section within 24 hours.
"We will be compelled to launch protest if the minister does not apologize," Deepak Mudbhari, an employee of the hospital, said.
Likewise, the hospital administration has also complained with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Monday about the state minister´s misbehavior. "We have informed the prime minister about Yadav´s misbehavior and sent its carbon copy to the Ministry of Health," Dr Bulanda Thapa, director of the hospital, said.
He said the meeting of senior doctors and department heads of hospital has condemned the state minister´s act. "We have also demanded action against the guilty," Dr Thapa added.
Similarly Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has also demanded stern action against the state minister. An NMA statement on Monday also demanded immediate investigation of the incident. The association has also threatened protest if the state minister is not punished.
Meanwhile, State Minister Yadav on Monday claimed that he was not drunk on Sunday night and he did not misbehave with anyone. He said his mother in-law was brought to the hospital from Birgunj after a brain hemorrhage but for hours no doctor attended to her.
"My wife was with her mother at the hospital. She phoned me and told that no doctor was attending to her mother despite waiting for hours." he said.
He said he then reached the hospital and asked to call the duty chief of the emergency ward . "Instead of calling the duty chief they called the media." he added.
