  SPORTS BRIEFS: Victory Rana wins title

KATHMANDU, April 19: Victory Rana became the above-65 singles champion in the First Citizens Bank Veterans Tennis Tournament on Thursday. He defeated Madhukar Rana 8-5 in the final played at the National Sports Council Tennis Court.

Likewise, Sukaman Tamang, Sanjib Shrestha, Sanu Lama and Rohit Sunawar reached the semifinal of above 35 years age group singles while Karma Ghale, Subarna Dhakhwa, Pradeep Shah and Krishna Raj Ghale secured berths in the last four of the above 45 years age group singles.

In the 45-above doubles, pairs of Subarna Dhakhwa and Krishna Raj Ghale, Manoj Rana and Sovitman Shrestha, Dharma Shahi and Sanjay Amatya as well as Chhamba Dhundup and Uttam Lama entered into the semifinals.

Koshwar, BK clinch gold

KATHMANDU: Sansu Koshwar of Kathmandu, Susmita BK of Rupandehi and Azalea Rajkarnikar of Lalitpur clinched gold medals in the opening day of the First NECOS Junior National Taekwondo Championship on Thursday. Koshwar defeated Bikas Rai of Kavre in the final of the boys´ 45 kg weight category while Aitasingh Tamang of Kavre and Suraj Shrestha of Lalitupr claimed bronze medals of the event. BK edged past Anjali Aslami Magar of Bijeshwari Gyan Mandir in the final of girls´ 46 kg weight category.

Trikala Gurung of Parsa and Asmita Basnet of Bara claimed bronze medals of the events, held at the National Sports Council Covered Hall. In girls´ poomse event for red belt holders, Azalea Rajkarnikar finished on the top while Shanta Shrestha of Rupendehi claimed silver. Bijeshwari´s Pramila Meyangbo and Nitika Gurung bagged bronze medals in the event. Former Minister for Finance Surendra Pandey inaugurated the three-day championship organized by Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS).

Challakhel clinches football title

KATHMANDU: Challakhel New Club clinched the title of First Chakratirtha Cup U-17 Seven-A-Side Football Tournament on Thursday. Challakhel came from behind to record a 2-1 win over Powerful Youth Club in the final held at Chobhar. Bimal Thapa netted both the goals for Chhalakhel. Thapa scored in the 27th minute to cancel Powerful´s 24th minute lead taken from Sanjog Maharjan.

Thapa ensured victory in the 33rd minute with the second goal. The winner bagged a purse of Rs 10,000 and the runner up was awarded with Rs 5,000. Nishant KC of Powerful was declared the best player, while Rabi Thapa Magar of Gwaldaha won the highest scorer award for scoring nine goals. Satish Rajak of Gwaldaha was adjudged the best goalkeeper. The event sponsored by Chakratirtha Group Pvt Limited was organized by Manujshree United Club.
