Don't spare criminals under political cover: PM to IGP

KATHMANDU, April 22: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has directed Nepal Police Inspector General Rabindra Pratap Shah to crack down on criminals who are allegedly under protection of political parties and leaders.
According to Bishwadeep Pandey, the prime minister´s personal secretary, the prime minister called the police chief on Saturday and directed him to go after such criminals without fearing anyone.
Earlier, the prime minister had discussed the issue of political parties providing protection to criminals with top leaders of the major political parties and Madhesi leaders on Saturday.
Pandey said that all the parties have supported the prime minister´s initiative.
"There are many complaints of politicians and parties providing protection to criminals. In some cases even top leaders have been found exerting pressure on security agencies not to book criminals," said Pandey.
"Any act of hooliganism or crime committed under the cover of any political party is punishable," the prime minister told the top leaders of major parties Saturday, according to the statement.
