12 Tharu organizations for three provinces in Tarai
CHITWAN, April 22: A round-table conference of the representatives of various Tharu groups on Sunday concluded that North-South delineation of states is unacceptable to them.
Concluding the two-day conference, the joint alliance of 12 Tharu organizations issued a declaration paper demanding that the 22 districts in the Tarai region be delineated into three provinces in the federal map of the country.
Participants of the conference said that they plan to announce protest programs to press for a province with Tharu identity. They have demanded to delineate three provinces in the Tarai region -- Tharuwan or Tharuhat autonomous province covering areas from West Kanchanpur to Chitwan, Mid-Tarai Simraungadh province covering areas from Parsa to Dhanusha and Purweli Tharuhat or Tharuwan Kochila autonomous province covering areas from Siraha to Jhapa.
Tharu organizations have demanded 90 percent share for the provincial government in the revenue collected in that particular province and 10 percent for the central government.
Similarly, they have demanded that Tharuhat and indigenous movements be mentioned in the preamble of the new constitution. Tharu organizations have decided to organize publicity gathering in nine districts in order to exert pressure on government to address their concerns.
Over 150 representatives from across the 22 Tarai districts participated in the round-table seminar.
