KATHMANDU, April 24: The western fast food culture has highly influenced the life of Nepalis living in major city areas. Until few years back, Nepali consumers were inclined towards Chinese and Indian dishes. But the case is not the same now.
According to restaurateurs, Nepalis are increasingly choosing fast food because of their busy schedule and changing lifestyle trends. With people preferring fast food items like burger, sandwiches and fries over traditional food varieties, the number of fast food outlets in the capital is increasing at a fast pace.
Currently, there are more than two dozen fast food outlets in Kathmandu alone. Burger King, Burger Point, Tit´s n Bit´s, Bombay Bites, Tasty Bites, R.d´s Café are among the newly opened outlets selling fast food items.
Tejendra Nath Shrestha, president of Restaurant and Bar Association of Nepal (REBAN), said demand for fast food items like burger, sandwiches and fries are on the rise due to people´s busy schedule. “Customers do not have to wait for long to get these foods. Also they can be taken away with ease,” added Shrestha.
With more fast food outlets opening in the city, customers have more options to choose from. In these outlets, people can choose different varieties of burger and sandwich such as ham, fish, chicken, grilled chicken, chicken tikka, spicy, egg, club and mixed among others.
“These days more people are choosing fast food items such as burgers, sandwiches and fries over other food varieties,” said Rabindra Maharjan, manager of Burger Point at Basantapur.
Nilam Konda, who was waiting for the burger at the store, said she prefer fast food items because such stores have huge varieties of food items to choose from. “Also as we have limited time for lunch, we don´t have to wait for long,” she added.
Customers are attracted towards fast food items particularly due to casual, quick and economical nature of the food variety. “Fast food products such as burger take no time for preparation and serves best during rush hour and are relatively cheaper than other foods. Besides, one has huge varieties of choices and from,” a staff at Freak Street Fast Food and Café said, explaining the reasons behind growing popularity of fast food items.
