SIRAHA, April 29: The District Administration Office (DEO), Siraha has warned of shutting down unregistered schools in the district. The office decided to take such an action after an investigation led by the office showed that the unregistered schools in the district far outnumbered the registered ones.
According to district education officer Hari Basti, as many as 53 schools in the district are not registered. “As they are not registered they do not pay taxes. We have warned them that they either get registered or we will shut them down forever,” said Basti.
Under existing laws, private schools are required to pay one percent of the total monthly fees of the students and 25 percent of total profit to the government, besides other taxes.
Murari Prasad Shah, president of Private and Boarding Schools´ Organization Nepal (PABSON), Siraha said, “Such schools only try to attract more students and do not focus on quality education,” he said.
Similarly, president of National Private and Boarding Schools´ Organization of Nepal (N-PABSON) Jayprakash Chaudhari said unregistered schools should be shut down without delay.
Of the 53 unregistered schools in the district, nine schools are in Lahan municipality alone, five in Golbazaar and the rest in other parts of the district.
