Reports: 103 rescued, 150 missing in India ferry mishap

AGENCIES

GUWAHATI, India, May 1: Over a hundred bodies have been pulled out of a river in the Indian state of Assam, where a packed ferry met with an accident on Monday.

According to AP, army divers and rescue workers have pulled out 103 bodies out of the Brahmaputra River till Tuesday.

At least 150 others were still missing, Reuter said quoting Jayanta Narayan Choudhury, police chief of the state of Assam where the boat sank.

The ferry carrying about 350 people had broken into two pieces in the river. Reports said around 150 passengers swam to safety or were rescued by villagers.

The accident occurred near Fakiragram village in west Dhubri district, about 350 kilometers west of the state capital, Guwahati, and close to where the Brahmaputra River enters Bangladesh.

Reports said strong winds and rain likely caused the accident.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement expressing shock and grief at the loss of life.
