Appeal for son's rescue from UAE death row

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, May 6: The father of Amar Bam, who is on death row for allegedly being complicit in the murder of an Indian businessman in Dubai, has asked the government to take initiatives to save his son. Amar was arrested in connection to the murder of a Dubai-based Indian businessman, Sharad Shetty, in 2003.

A Dubai court slapped death sentence on Amar nine years ago. Shetty was shot dead by Manoj Mudana and Karan Singh inside a club in Dubai. Amar, who worked as a driver in Dubai, had dropped Manoj and Karan outside the club and picked them up after the murder of Shetty. Amar has claimed that he was unaware of their plan.

All of them were sentenced to death by a Dubai court despite Manoj and Karan admitting that Amar was not aware about their intention.
At a press conference organized by the secretariat of Save Amar Campaign in Kathmandu on Sunday, Karna Bahadur Bam, 65, a resident of Dhari VDC in Darchula district, said, "I am a simple man from village. I do not know much.

I just hope that my son will return home one day if our government helps us." The campaign, which was initiated by Prabasi Nepali Coordination Committee (PNCC), an NGO run by former migrant workers, has asked the government to expedite diplomatic efforts to save Amar.

Amar´s father Karna Bahadur, who arrived in Kathmandu via India as the far west region remains crippled by strikes, is trying to meet the president and the prime minister to draw their attention to his son´s case.
