BIRATNAGAR, May 11: Nepal police seized huge quantity of betel nut while being smuggled to India. The police took control of a truck carrying 16 tons of betel nut from Shanihaat in Biratnagar on Friday morning.
Uma Prasad Chaturbedi, spokesperson of Nepal Police, Morang said the seized betel nut was now kept at Biratnagar Custom Office and said further investigations were underway.
According to police, primary investigation showed the betel nut was brought from Nikhil and Avi Enterprises of Birtamod. Following strict checking along Kakadbhitta border by armed Indian paramilitary force SSB, Nepali traders were now using unauthorized route through Biratnagar for smuggling into India.
SSB had agreed to control the illicit export of betel nut following agreement of high ranking police officials recently.
Deputy Inspector General Surendra Bahadur Shah said, “ Security officials of both countries have agreed on a commong strategy to control the smuggling and other criminal activities.”
