  Nepal finishes first in int'l karate

KATHMANDU, May 13: Nepal on Sunday lifted the team championship trophy of First Katsuhiko Gibo Memorial International Karate Championship at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu. Nepal won 17 gold, 13 silver and 28 bronze medals while India finished second winning five gold medals.

In a-day long sports meet organized by Nepal Shito-Ryu Karate Do Association, Bijay Lama of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) defeated Sonam Lama of National team in 50 kg weight category for gold. In 55 kg weight category, Sunil Lama of National team thumped Mani Kumar Sunuwar of Nepal Army for gold. Binod Maharjan of National team bagged gold in 60 kg weight category defeating Ganesh Paija of Western Region.

In 67 kg, Mukunda Maharjan thumped Diwas Shrestha to clinch gold. Bhim Bahadur Tamang bagged gold in 84 kg while Lal Bahadur Baduwa of APF bagged gold in above 84 kg weight category. In 75 kg, Lekhnath Mainali won gold medal defeating Santa Bahadur Rai of APF.

In men´s team kata, National team clinched gold while Nepal Army settled for silver. In men´s single kata Parsuram Bastola clinched gold while Subash Karki of Nepal Army took home silver.

In women´s section, Mallika Thapa bagged gold in 45 kg and Anu Adhikari bagged gold in 50 kg. Likewise, in 55kg Roji Nagarkoti, in 61 kg Sarita Shrestha, in 68 kg Ganga Adhikari and in U-68 kg Kalpana Basnet won the gold.

National team bagged gold in women´s team kata while Central Region finished in the second position. Bimala Tamang clinched gold in women´s single kata.
