KATHMANDU, May 14: Nepali U-16 cricket team, which finished second in the ACC U-16 Elite Cup, received a warm welcome from officials of the Cricket Association of Nepal upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday.
Though the coach and skipper were a bit disappointed about the team finishing second in the tournament, they were happy with the team´s performance. Coach Manzur Alam Khan said the team had played to the best of their ability.
Alam lamented that the team could not play the full 40 overs in the final. “The players selected wrong shots and they lost patience during the final.”
“Our players had less match experience and they mis-fielded during the final which cost us the title,” said the coach, adding, “However, I am satisfied with their performance.”
Player-of-the-series Aakash Bista said the team performed well during the tournament. “We could not perform well in the final. We had kept Malaysian batsmen on the back foot but we threw the match away when we conceded 12 runs in an over.”
Bista expressed hope that his performance in the tournament would help him qualify for the U-19 level. “I played for the country and hope to produce similar performances in other tournaments as well.”
Skipper Dipendra Chand expressed sadness after finishing second for the second straight time. Chand was a member of the U-16 squad that finished second in the first edition of the tournament held in 2010.
“We lacked in batting except in some matches,” said the skipper, adding, “We came under pressure in the final and the batsmen failed to deliver.”
