BIRATNAGAR, May 14: Police seized 57.7 tons of betel nuts loaded in three trucks from Biratnagar Customs Office last night, while the consignment was about to get clearance from the office for illegal re-export to India.
According to the officials of District Police Office, Morang, the seized betel nuts were imported from other countries to illegally export to India.
“We seized the consignment after we received tip-off that the betel nuts were imported from other countries to re-export to India,” Uma Prasad Chaturbedi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, told Republica.
The betel nuts were being exported by Biratnagar-based Manakamana Import-Export Company.
The company had even secured ´country of origin´ certificate for the betel nuts from Betel nuts Farming Development Organization. But police say the organization´s license expired last year and that it held no authority to issue country of origin certificates.
