KATHMANDU, May 16: The Asian Weightlifting Confederation (AWC) has conferred the Asian gold medal on Parthasarathi Sengupta, general secretary of the Nepal Weightlifting Association and senior weightlifting coach of the National Sports Council (NSC).
Asian gold award is the biggest award in Asian weightlifting. Gupta was given the award on April 22 during the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championship in Incheon, South Korea. AWC President Mohammad Almana and General Secretary Ali Muradin Gupta conferred the award on Sengupta.
Sengupta was in Incheon as a member of the jury. He is currently the secretary of AWC technical committee and has been actively involved in weightlifting for more than three decades. He has also served in different committees of AWC in the past.
"I think the award was given for my dedication and hard work and contribution to the development of weightlifting," said Gupta, a two-time national weightlifting champion in 1979 and 1980.
According to Gupta he was unaware of the award before his name was announced as the gold medalist. Gupta was the first coach to be appointed at NSC in 1982.
