Tharu extend banda; others strike elsewhere

DHANGADI/DOTI, May 18: Adding to the woes of the people who have faced banda for the last 22 days, Joint Tharu struggle committee has again announced 4 more days of banda in Kailali and Kanchanpur district.

Banda has crippled normal life of the people in many parts of the Far west region, shutting down educational institutions, transportation, industries, markets and even hospitals.

Stoppage of transportation in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts has resulted in the dwindling supplies of even the most basic medicines in the hill districts of the Far western region adding to the already serious scarcity of food and vegetables. The woes of hundreds of people stranded in the many places in the region are no less painful.

“As goods trucks have not been able to reach here people are facing serious problem. There is scarcity of daily essential items,” said Ram Bahadur Kuruwang, chief district officer in Achham. “The problem has not spared me either. You can´t even get noodles,” he added.

Meanwhile, banda enforcers in Janakpur did not allow even ambulance and press to ply on the roads. “The vehicles of media which do not cover our news will not only be obstructed but could be burnt as well,” warned a protestor. Madhesi Morcha and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Nepal had also called for nationwide banda on Friday.

Similarly in Dharan, banda enforcers from RPP obstructed drinking water tankers. There is acute shortage of water in the area and people are forced to buy drinking water. However, on the day of banda Friday, RPP was not hesitant to deprive people of water. “It is too much. They have not even allowed water tankers to provide services,” said a local.
