KATHMANDU, May 23: People buying digital cameras will now have to dig deeper into their pockets as price of cameras has increased by 3-9 percent in the local market.
Some distributors raised prices effective from Wednesday, while some are in the process of making upward revision in the prices of their products.
Primax International - the authorized distributor of Canon cameras in Nepal - raised prices of Canon digital cameras by 4 to 9 percent on Wednesday itself. Similarly, Samsung digital cameras are set to become dearer by 3-4 percent within a few days, while Sony is raising camera prices by 4 to 6 percent within a fortnight.
The dealers have attributed their decision to consistent rise in exchange rate of US dollar vis-à-vis Nepali currency and revaluation of customs valuation of digital cameras by customs authority.
“US dollar has been consistently gaining values against Nepali currency making our imports dearer. This compelled us to increase the price of normal digital camera and SLR cameras by 4 to 9 percent effective from Wednesday,” said Dinesh Agrawal, marketing manager of Primax International.
With the fresh hike, prices of Canon cameras have increased in range of Rs 591 to Rs 7,807 depending on the models. Prior to the price hike, Canon cameras available in Nepal were priced between Rs 10,690 and Rs 358,008.
“Canon cameras were already expensive compared to other brands because of attractive designs and facilities like Wi-Fi connectivity, HS system and high sensitive sensors. Hopefully the price hike won´t affect sales,” said Agrawal.
Citing the same reasons, Binaya Tripathy, deputy general manager of Him Electronics -- authorized distributor of Samsung -- said the company was increasing the price of Samsung cameras by 3 to 4 percent within 10 to 15 days.
Samsung cameras are currently available in the range of Rs 8,690 to Rs 90,990.
Likewise, Rabindra Maharjan, sales executive of Sony showroom at New Road, said Sony digital cameras will become dearer by 4 to 6 percent within a fortnight. Sony cameras are currently available in range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 235,700.
