General strikes in east takes heavy toll on life

RSS

BHADRAPUR, May 24: The relentless general strike since the last 16 days has taken a heavy toll on life and services in the eastern region including in Jhapa district.

The shutdown enforced one after the other by various ethnic organizations has led to shortage of food, medicines and essential commodities in the region.

Life has become more difficult after the Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajya Parishad (Sanjuhang Palungwa), an ethnic group, enforced a three-day banda in nine districts to the east of the Arun River since Wednesday.

Vegetables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees has rotted and the vegetable prices in local markets have skyrocketed. So has the price of petroleum products soared in the black market as the fuel cannot be transported due to the shutdown. Petrol that cost Rs. 120 per litre now costs Rs. 250 in the black.

The flow of people coming to government offices in the district headquarters of Bhadrapur has also decreased due to the shutdown.
