Sweeping changes needed to avert party split: Chand
REPUBLICA
KATHMANDU, June 2: UCPN (Maoist) leader Netra Bikram Chand who is close to the hardline faction led by party Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya said on Saturday that the party has to adopt sweeping changes in order to keep the party from splitting.
Chand said Baidya should be made chairman of the party, while party General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa be chosen the prime minister.
According to the Reporters Club Nepal, Chand made the statement while speaking at The RD Show, a talk show, to be aired Saturday night on the Himalayan Television.
During the recorded interview, Chand argued that as party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister and Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai have failed in their ideological line and leadership, they should hand over the party leadership to save the party from splitting.
Baidya is the most suitable person to lead the party as he has been spearheading the party on the ideological front since a long time, Chand added. Dahal should forgo party chairmanship and hand over the responsibility to Baidya for the sake o f unity in the party, Chand stressed.
