KATHMANDU, June 9: UCPN (Maoist) led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday decided to hold a mass meeting in Kathmandu on June 15 in a move aimed to counter the Friday´s mass gathering of 22 opposition parties in Kathmandu.
Dahal made the announcement at the meeting with the members of the Tamsaling and Newa state committees.
Coincidently, the mass gathering has been planned on the day when the Mohan Baidya faction of the party is organizing its national gathering. Dahal has directed the state committees to ensure participation of over 100,000 cadres in the gathering.
"Those who support identity- based federalism, including leaders from the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML will participate in the gathering," Dhawa Lama, central committee member close to the establishment, quoted Dahal as saying.
According to another CC member Raju Khadka, the mass meeting is expected to turn public opinion in favor of the Constituent Assembly election scheduled for November 22.
"The party is on the verge of split as the rift in the party has been growing wider. The mass meeting will be a show of our strength," leader Khadka quoted Dahal as saying.
Chairman Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai will address the mass meeting in Kathmandu. The establishment faction has also organizing similar mass meetings in major cities across country.
