KATHMANDU, June 17: Surya Nepal Central Open, the third event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2012-13, will tee off on Monday at the Gokarna Golf Club, Kathmandu.
According to Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA), the four-day event will be played over 72 holes and there will be a cut applied after the second round (36 holes). Only top 20 pros and ties will make their journey to the final 36 holes along with top nine amateurs.
Altogether 29 professional golfers will test their skills for total prize money of Rs 467,500. The winner of the event will bag Rs 88,000, the runner -up will earn Rs 55,000 and the third will get Rs 40,700.
On the other hand, 24 amateurs will their rub shoulders with the professionals in this tournament.
Defending champion and Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha, who returned home after participating in a PGTI event in Gurgaon, is ready to vie for the trophy. Ghana Shyam Open champion Rabi Khadka is also eyeing for consecutive titles while Toran Shahi, Deepak Thapa Magar, Umesh Nagarkoti and Surya Sharma could be other challengers.
In amateur section, No 1 member of Surya Nepal NGA Youth Golf Development Program Bikash Bogati, will be eyeing for another top amateurs position in this event along with Tashi Tsering, Tashi Ghale, Wangchen Dhondup and Dinesh Prajapati, among others.
Dangol clinches Maitri chess
KATHMANDU: Bijay Dangol of host Annapurna School on Sunday clinched the title of the Eighth Annapurna Maitri Chess Tournament in boys´ above 13 years age category. Raj Prajapati finished second while Suraj Lohani remained satisfied in the third position. In girls´ same age category, Kabita Prajapati, Ashma Shrestha and Matina Kusi finished first, second and third respectively. In U-13 boys´ Sanjay Shrestha, Bikesh Jaiswal and Jenish Thapa finished in the top three positions. Bina Jaiswal, Suruchi Thing and Puja Das Baniya clinched top three positions in U-13 girls´ section.
In U-11 boys´ section, Bikash Thokar, Milan Lama and Rajiv Karki secured top three positions respectively while Perisa Tamrakar, Amisa Acharya and Chanda Jaiswal finished top three in girls´ U-11 section. In U-9 boys´ section, Anish Neupane, Bidit Pratap and Bishal Sunwal finished in the top three positions while Anusa Pandey, Onika Baniya and Chandrawati Pandit finished first, second and third respectively. Altogether 200 players from 35 schools had participated in the three-day tournament.
Rana appointed ATU executive member
KATHMANDU: President of Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) Prakash Sumsher Rana on Sunday has been nominated as the executive member of Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU). According to a press statement issued by NTA, Rana was appointed for the post for his contribution to the development of taekwondo in Nepal. Rana had represented Nepal during the general assembly of ATU on May 4 in Vietnam. Rana had earlier received black belt 6th dan from World Taekwondo headquarters for the development of the game in Nepal. Rana had been involved in taekwondo since 2046 BS and was elected NTA president unopposed three year earlier.
