POKHARA, June 18: Nine houses and some shops and restaurants in Hemja VDC-1 were destroyed by a landslide triggered by flooding in the Seti River following nonstop rain Sunday night.
The flood, which has put the entire settlement at great risk, changed course at Myamdi and turned toward the village.
The massive flood had turned toward the village at around 4 am. According to the locals, houses along Pokhara-Baglung Highway shook due to the landslide in the village. "Alarmed by a possible disaster, people began rushing and jumping to safety. Some also sustained injuries in the scramble," said a local. In a similar case, 15-year-old Usha Lalchan broke her hand. She is receiving treatment at Manipal hospital.
The flood has also washed away the new pipeline laid by Mardikhola-Pokhara Drinking Water Project. This has added to the drinking water shortage in Pokhara. The May 5 flood in the same river had swept away another major pipeline, which has not yet been replaced.
Similarly, the Sunday night flood has also destroyed a 100-meter road leading a squatter settlement on the bank of the river . According to superintendent of police Bhuwaneshwar Tiwari, the flood also swept away a truck (Ga 1 Kha 3710).
