Girl sold in brothel seeks justice

DHRUBA DANGAL

SINDHUPALCHOWK, June 23: The torture she underwent is still fresh in her memory. Nevertheless, Chautara (name changed), who just passed her SLC exams in the second division, is firm in her resolve to continue to fight for justice and put those who sold her off in an Indian brothel behind bars.

Chautara was merely 14 when she was trafficked from Sindhupalchowk to India in 2009 to be sold off in a brothel in Kashmir.

Though she returned after an eight month ordeal in the brothel, she continues to face challenges. “For people like us there are many challenges, including rehabilitation in the society,” said Chautara who wants to become a journalist.

According to Chautara, Sukuman, Bajirsingh Tamang and Tekbahadur BK are currently in custody for investigation while some others involved in trafficking her are still absconding. She continues to receive threats from them.

“They have been giving me threatening calls,” said Chautara. “But I will fight till the end.”
