KATHMANDU, June 23: CPN (UML) Chairman Jhalanath Khanal on Saturday said that the Constituent Assembly (CA), the “brainchild of the communist movement” in the country, met its end due to ultra-left deviation.
"The CA that was born out of a protracted left movement was killed by the ultra-leftist mindset of the UCPN (Maoist). This is a blot in the history of communist movement," he opined.
Speaking at an orientation program organized by UML, Khanal said the UCPN (Maoist) failed to understand the difficulty with which the Nepali Congress came to accept the CA and the republic.
He also accused the UCPN (Maoist) of double standards regarding the CA.
Stating that announcement of fresh CA polls was an immature and unconstitutional, he also accused caretaker Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai of announcing fresh CA polls even when the chances of promulgating the new constitution through then CA was alive.
Noting that the Interim Constitution has not made any provision for new constitution, he said Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai made an immature and unconstitutional decision by announcing the election date for a new CA.
The UCPN (Maoist) and the United Democratic Madhesi Front are trying to stay in power by prolonging the constitutional crisis, he said, adding that the Nepali Congress and the UML would not allow this to happen.
Claiming that the ultra-leftist elements are planning to launch yet another “People´s War” while the ultra-rightist are conspiring to revive monarchy, he also urged the democratic forces to unite and fight these undemocratic forces.
Reiterating his party´s stance that the prime minister should step down to pave the way for forming a consensus government, Khanal said that his party was in favor of multi-ethnic provinces rather than single ethnic identity-based provinces.
