  Chhetri bags Dasharath Chand Award

KATHMANDU, July 1: National Sports Council (NSC) and Shahid Dasharath Chand Memorial Trust awarded the Dasharath Chand Most Talented Sports Personality award of the year 2068 BS to cricketer Rubina Chhetri on Sunday.

NSC and the trust organized an award ceremony at the Dasharath Stadium on Sunday to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Martyr Dasharath Chand.

Chhetri, who as a captain made Nepalcomplete title hat-trick in the ACC U-19 Women´s Championship, received Rs 15,101 and a letter of appreciation. Former prime minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand handed over the award and the cash prize to Chhetri.

Likewise, judokas Saroj Maharjan of Central Region and Rohit Karki of Mid-western Region bagged talented sports personalities of year 2068 award. Maharjan had won gold medal in the South Asian Judo Championship held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Karki had also clinched gold in the South Asian Cadate Judo Championship held in Kathmandu last year.

Meanwhile, weightlifters Tara Devi Pun of Western Region and Champa Thakulla of Far-western Region also collected the award of talented sports personalities of year 2068. Pun had claimed gold medals in the First South Asian Weightlifting Championship held in Nepalgunj while Thakulla had claimed a silver medal and a bronze in the same championship.

Maharjan, Karki, Pun and Thakulla all received Rs 10,101 each along with letters of appreciation.

Former Minister Lekhraj Bhatta, NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and the trust´s Chairperson KB Chand handed over prizes to the athletes.

The award was established by the trust to promote and encourage Nepali athletes. "We award the athletes, who achieve success at the national and international level on the recommendation of National Sports Council," said KB Chand, chairperson of the trust.

Addressing the award ceremony, NSC Member Secretary Lama vowed to change the centralized mechanism of Nepali sports.

"Martyr Chand was a revolutionary hero, who gave his life for a change. However, we are yet witness changes in Nepali sports. Our mechanism is centralized. On his birth anniversary, I vow here as a NSC member secretary to bring a change in Nepali sports," said Lama. Lama said NSC would focus on developing sports in all the VDCs, schools and colleges across the country.
