Tension grips Bharatpur hospital over alleged assault on staffer

CHANDANI HAMAL

KATHMANDU, July 13: Employees of the Bharatpur Cancer Hospital have halted all services, except the emergency services, over an alleged assault by a retired police officer on a nurse at the hospital, on Friday.

The employees have accused former deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bir Bahadur Chand of manhandling a nurse, Anita Bhushal, at the hospital over the death of Chand´s daughter Barsha Thursday night.

The Armed Police Force´s retired DSP had allegedly beat up the nurse, accusing her of carelessness for the death of his daughter. According to Bhupal Kumar Bhandari, superintendent of police (SP) at the district police office, an investigation into the incident is underway.

A discussion is also being held to resolve the issue at the hospital. Tension is running high at the hospital following the incident. The employees have also demanded security for them after the incident. Barsha, who had been undergoing treatment for cancer for last one-and a-half years, died last night.
