Itahari reward people caring for elderly

AMAR KHADKA

ITAHARI, July 17: It is not a new thing to reward people for their contribution in various sectors of society. But in Itahari sons, daughter-in-laws and even grand children have been recognized and rewarded for providing good care to their parents, in-laws or grand parents .

Durga Bista of Itahari initiated this idea a month ago. He established a revolving fund in the name of his parents and conferred Rs 10,000 cash prize to a couple for providing good care to their parents in Sunsari district. Now others have joined Bista to offer such rewards by creating their own funds.

Seven people were rewarded for their providing good care to their parents on Tuesday. During a function organized by senior citizens in the district, Sakuntala Gelal of Bhadgaun Sinubari, Sabitri Lamsal of Itahari-5, Sushma Chaudhari, Srijana Koirala, Dharma Prasad Chaulagain, Manjala Bhattarai and Durga Dangal were rewarded. Executive director of Itahari municipality Ganesh Karki gave away Rs 3,000 cash prize and certificate to each of them.

Manjala was rewarded for providing care to her grandfather. She said that she helped her grandfather take bath and to resolve other problems he faced.

Among others rewarded, Sakuntala has been serving her father-in-law, Sabitra has been caring for her 102-year-old mother-in-law. Sushma and Srijana are taking care of their mother-in-laws. Durga has been serving her father-in-law.

Likewise, Dharma Parsad, a rickshaw puller originally from Bhojpur, is caring for his 95-years-old father Khadananda. Dharma has been providing good care to his father despite meager earnings from his profession. Dharma, 45, is still a bachelor. “I feel proud for the recognition by society for my efforts to take care of my father ,” he said at the program.

The municipality has built a meeting place for senior citizen at office premises where about 250 elderly people have organized themselves.
